The Samaritan Center is a one-stop community resource center. It houses 70+ community agencies. Each provides services to help more than 45,000 people annually. Samaritan was built as Mercy Hospital in 1984. It closed in 2000 and its 500,000 sq. ft. of space in three buildings was donated by Trinity Health System for community reuse. Since opening 10 years ago Samaritan has recruited partner agencies to address some of the community’s most challenging issues. The lack of available and affordable dental care is one of those issues. It has disproportionately affected children and low income adults especially ones on Medicaid. Samaritan set out to address this need several years ago when it started raising funds to build a new Wellness Center and incorporate a 10 chair dental clinic in it. Support from many sources, including the Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation, opened the dental clinic August 24, 2011. It is now providing dental services that target low income residents and their children. A unique collaboration of the City of Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion, services provider Michigan Community Dental Clinics and Samaritan Center supports the services. Ultimately we expect that more than 7,000 patients will receive services annually.
