Running the Distance for Suicide Prevention!
Thank you for visiting my page! I am raising awareness and funds for Samaritans, Inc., a non-profit dedicated to reducing the incidence of suicide.
I am running the marathon in memory of my good friend, Lauren. I met Lauren my first year of pharmacy school in NY, and we became fast friends. We lived together on and off campus throughout school. We both moved to Massachusetts around the same time, and even though we were still an hour away from each other, we would see each other quite often. We would spend weekends together with her fiancé in Western Mass. hiking up Mt. Tom or out in the Berkshires and running around Ashley Reservoir. We had both just started to get into running, and she was very encouraging. I have always said that 26.2 miles is way more than I would ever want to run (I have since run a few half marathons). Lauren took her own life in March 2013, about a month before the Boston Marathon. As excitement around the marathon grew, I would think back to running Ashley Reservoir with Lauren, and her encouragement, and I just felt it was something I had to do. When I started looking into charity bibs, I noticed Samaritans, a suicide prevention organization, and I knew that was the charity I wanted to run for.
All proceeds generated will benefit Samaritans' suicide prevention services including our 24/7 Crisis Services including a Crisis Text Line providing emotional support to young people via text. Last year, Samaritans answered over 142,000 calls and more than 900 chats; our prevention services reached almost 13,000 people through their Community Education and Outreach Program workshops; and their Grief Support Services provided more than 900 connections to those who have lost a loved one to suicide.
Each day - because of donors like you - Samaritans is able to provide a moment of light and hope to people who are struggling, isolated, or feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes the warmth of a voice and the ear of someone who cares is all any of us needs to make it through a difficult moment. For more information about Samaritans life-saving programs, please visit the website at www.samaritanshope.org.
If you prefer to make a donation via check, you can mail it to Samaritans' office at 41 West Street, 4th Floor, Boston MA 02111 with "Deanna Scinto" in the memo line.
Thank you so much for your support.
