THE STORY:

It started out with what Sam and I thought was a pretty simple and routine colonoscopy. Neither of us thought much of it until we heard those world-stopping words, “it’s cancer.” It was a moment that we will never forget.

With a flurry of further testing and meetings with doctors and surgeons, we learned the cancer was contained in the colon. That was fabulous news in our books. Sam had a scary road ahead of him, but from that moment, his strength shone through. “I’m going to beat this,” he said.

Our trip home to celebrate Christmas suddenly became much more. We decided to have the necessary surgery performed in Omaha. We knew we would need the support of all our family and friend nearby. As we packed up the car, I remember Sam joking with me. “Can you get the rest of the bags?” he said, “I mean, I do have cancer.” I wasn’t quite at the joking point, yet, I told him. As I look back now, I’m so amazed at his strength and confidence from very early on. I believe it has a lot to do with Sam’s faith.

I remember that seven hour drive back to Omaha so vividly. We talked and talked about life, what was ahead of us, and how incredibly lucky we were that God brought this news of colon cancer to us when he did. That may sound odd, but colon cancer is not something that typically occurs in men as young as Sam. We suddenly felt blessed that we were aware of this news. We knew there was still a major surgery and recovery ahead. But, the cancer had been detected so early that we believed God brought this to our attention when he did because Sam is meant to be on this earth for a long, long time.

After what seemed like an eternity in the hospital waiting room. We learned that Sam’s surgery was a success! After removing half of Sam's colon, Dr. Thorson was confident Sam was cancer-free. From the moment Sam was coherent again, his positive attitude and strength was apparent once more. He was joking with the nurses, up walking the halls, and he couldn’t wait to get out of Methodist to have a “real burger!”

It was only about a month’s time from the moment we found out about Sam having colon cancer until he had recovered from his surgery and we were back in Springfield. It was all such a whirlwind. Looking back on it now, it was the most important month of our lives. Because Sam was aware of his body, because he had a doctor who took an extra step and ordered a colonoscopy, because we had a wonderful surgeon who removed the cancerous portion of Sam’s colon, because we had the support of family and friends to get us through, we are forever grateful for that month. We are aware now. And that’s the most important thing. We have a better outlook on life and look forward to a very long and rewarding future with our kids, family and friends.

I will beat this,

Yes I can!

I will beat this,

Sam I Am!
