WHY DO I RUN? I run because I love the immense peace of solitude in motion; the intimacy of my breathe and heart and the clarity that comes once both are in sync; the power of knowing I can elevate my body and overcome pain; and the joy of reaching the finish line. But beyond all the spiritual, physical, and mental benefits of running - I run because I CAN! There are many women and girls in the world who simply don't have the freedom to run, due to cultural restrictions or the inability to leave their home for reasons of security or harassment. But thanks to organizations such as Free to Run, women and girls can now have opportunities and resources to experience the sense of adventure and empowerment that comes from running or outdoor physical activities. Free to Run organized the first women's marathon in Afghanistan in 2015 and are now supporting another marathon to take place this year. THIS IS HUGE!!! Being an Afghan-American woman myself, I understand both the social stigma girls and women have in Afghanistan to simply run outside and I also know I cannot imagine my life without this freedom to run! I am running the SF marathon this year to bring awareness to Free to Run and raise funds that will go towards supporting the next marathon in Afghanistan (safe transportation for training practices, flights for women flying in from other provinces to ensure ethnic/socioeconomic diversity, accommodation and gear). Please support my cause!
