To bridge the gap in services for children who are medically fragile and/or developmentally delayed by providing high quality educational and child care services for children, offering resources and education for families, and working to create a community of tolerance and inclusion.

Sammy’s House was established in 1999 as a home-based child care center in Austin, Texas serving four infants and toddlers who were medically fragile. The overwhelming response from parents and therapeutic professionals made it apparent there was a pressing need for this type of care in central Texas. To help meet this need, a group of families and concerned professionals came together to form a nonprofit organization and develop a service model, making plans to establish a larger, centrally located center that could serve more families.

This new nonprofit – what became Sammy’s House – opened a child development center in March of 2002. Our respite care program began in 2003, and our therapeutic equipment loaning program began in 2004. The child development center and the respite care program remain the foundation of our operations.

Additionally, support services are nestled within the key programs.  Sammy’s House helps families find the resources they need to care for their uniquely-abled child.  Because of the high stress factors associated with children with special needs, most families of special needs children will be led by a single parent, by the time the child is the age of three.  Our parents are welcomed and become part of a care-giving family, thus reducing feelings of isolation.  If it takes a village to raise a child, then a special child would require much more.

In the time since our inception, Sammy’s House has served 4,300 children. We reach about 300 children every year in our programs. Sammy’s House continues to expand our reach for young people with disabilities in our community through new services for teenagers requiring respite care and increased opportunities for development of social skills.
