THE STORY:

Kathleen Amsterdam wrote -

During the process of becoming a Bar Mitzvah you must complete a Mitzvah project. I thought about this a lot. I kept coming back to the soldiers that sacrafice their lives and fight for our freedoms every day. Then I remembered that my great grandpa Chick was in the military as was my Grandaddy. So, I chose the military as my focus. I am doing a hands on project with a non-profit here in Atlanta in August, but I also wanted to raise money for some soldiers after they come home. I started researching and found the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. They are rated an A+ by Charity Watch. 100% of your donations goes into their programing. That is all great and good but let me tell you why I think they are awesome. The IFHF is a leader in supporting men and women of the armed forces and their families. In 2007, they opened a state of the art rehab center called the Center for the Intrepid. This is for soldiers who have been catastrophically disabled in operations in Iraq or Afghanistan. In 2010, they moved their focus to traumatic brain injury and opened The National Intrepid Center of Excellence which specializes in TBI. They are serving large number of our soldiers after coming home. In 2013, the IFHF launched a campaign to extend care for service member suffering with TBI and psychological health conditions. The have plans to build Intrepid Spirit Centers at major military bases around the country. The first five are already in operation. The sixth is under construction. The charity spoke to me because they are not just treating the body, but ALSO the brain AND mind. We owe these soldiers and their families so much so I think it is awesome that an organization is stepping up and providing them with the services that they need. WE can help build those last three centers and support our wounded heroes in uniform. No amount is too small. Thanks so much - Samuel Amsterdam
