The San Diego Music Foundation has three core ways that we strengthen our city's music community:
- Guitars and Banjos for Schools has, for over 25 years, placed instruments into the hands of over 55,000 students at 85 schools all across San Diego County... and our work is nowhere near done. The San Diego Unified School District (the second largest in California) has lost 20% of its operating budget since 2008 and are “woefully underfunded”. 66% of the schools would not have a guitar or banjo program were it not for us and 38% of the schools we work with would have no music education at all! We strive for a day in which no student with a desire to learn be denied.
- The San Diego Music Thing is an annual music and media conference and festival (in the mold of an SXSW) that looks to give local artists the tools they need to success. We have panels by day (with the opportunity to network with some of the top music business people in the world and learn from the best and brightest minds in the industry - i.e. Moby, Chuck D of Public Enemy, and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth) and, at night, local bands play alongside national and regional bands on stages where many of the world’s leading music producers and agents will be watching. Many of our city’s top-tier artists must leave to Los Angeles or San Francisco before they achieve mainstream success. San Diego’s music scene is already incredibly diverse and talented and the San Diego Music Thing helps give local artists the knowledge necessary to reach larger audiences.
- We also put on the San Diego Music Awards where we celebrate the achievements of our local music community! We need your help to continue serving San Diego the way we do. Please support us in our mission to bring music education to everyone!
