BENEFITING: SANDY HOOK PROMISE FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: SANDY HOOK PROMISE FOUNDATION
I am excited to share with you that I will be running the TCS NYC Marathon on behalf of Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) to help spread their mission and raise funds and awareness.
SHP is a national, nonprofit organization based in Newtown, Connecticut. They are led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. Sandy Hook Promise is focused on preventing gun violence (and other forms of violence and victimization) BEFORE it happens by educating and mobilizing parents, schools and communities on mental health and wellness programs that identify, intervene and help at-risk individuals.
To say I am honored to be a part of the SHP Team is an understatement. Although I did not grow up in Newtown, CT, I have seen first-hand how this tragedy has impacted people I love. I was asked to run this race on behalf of Wendy Bowen, a retired Newtown school teacher. I first met Wendy in 2013, less than a year after her life was changed forever following the Sandy Hook Massacre. On the day of the Sandy Hook Massacre, Wendy was teaching at Newtown Middle School, just down the street from Sandy Hook Elementary School. Wendy and her students were forced into a terrifying two-and-a-half-hour lockdown with no communication from the outside world. She was responsible for keeping her students calm and safe during a terrifying time. Unfortunately, this was only the beginning of the nightmare, as she later learned that twenty children and six educators had been murdered. Wendy continued to teach in Newtown for two years following the tragedy, but eventually retired and moved to Rhode Island full time. Although Wendy no longer lives or teaches in Newtown, she is a passionate educational consultant who dedicates her time advocating for safer schools and preventing violence in our communities.
On November 5th, I will be lacing up my sneakers to run 26 miles, one mile for each life lost on that tragic day. I will proudly run in their memory. No child, parent, teacher, or community should ever have to experience tragedies like the Sandy Hook Massacre, yet we continue to see it time and time again in the news. I will run to raise awareness and raise funds for SHP. Together we can make a difference! If you have the ability to do so, please consider donating to this excellent foundation. No amount is too small and every penny could help save a life. I thank you in advance!
