I am thrilled, honored and privileged to be running the 2016 TCS NYC Marathon in partnership with Sandy Hook Promise. Running the NYC marathon will be fulfilling a life-long dream of mine. Partnering with Sandy Hook Promise and working to impact the mental health crisis and the resulting epidemic of gun violence will make this endeavor even more meaningful for me.
It's one of those "dates".....
I recall where I was that morning of 12/14/12 when the news about the Sandy Hook shootings started to emerge from various news sites. I was back at work at "the cheese company" after being home with my 3 boys for 6 years. At the onset of the news I wanted to leave work and go to them immediately and never leave my house again. It was the same nauseous feeling that chilled me for the days, weeks and months following 9/11. That day and weeks, months to follow rocked all of us, our nation to it's core. How could this happen? Who does this? And we began to scrutinize school security, doors, cameras, guards. How do we talk to the kids about the lock down drills? What happens if none of it works? What about the mailman who visits everyday? What about the UPS guy who drops off books? Who lives nearby? Is our school, our town next? And we keep asking ourselves the same question each day or week when we learn of more tragedy from the epidemic of gun violence, one of many symptoms of the growing mental health crisis in the US.
My goal is $26,000 (am I nuts?) and that's a bold goal but its simple math: $1000 in honor of each person killed that day: 20 children, ages 6-7, the age of my youngest son Ben, and six other fearless caregivers who were also called to be angels that fateful morning. Personal contributions, corporate gift matching and commitment will make this happen.
