“The Center inspires me. It’s the place I belong, you belong, and we all belong. How could I not be part of that?”
The San Francisco Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Community Center (the Center) is the first organization in the nation to provide programming that specifically addresses the economic obstacles facing LGBT people. These services have been replicated in other parts of the country and bring to light the significant economic consequences of discrimination for the LGBT community.
The Economic Development Department at the Center has created a menu of programs that comprehensively and holistically address economic barriers faced by LGBT people. Programs include a Transgender Employment Program (TEEI); employment services for LGBTQ people, assistance for LGBT small businesses to create employment, lending circles (a credit-building microloan), financial capability workshops, a first time homebuyers program, free income tax assistance and credit counseling. Each year, we serve approximately 1,000 people locally, and provide technical assistance to service providers nationally.
In this job crisis, we have created innovative programming to increase the scale of our impact. With your support we can help get America back to work and increase the economic wellness of LGBT people in need. Donate today and help us win up to $150,000 with your support!
Why our work is needed:
LGBT people suffer multiple economic disadvantages. Workplace discrimination stalls careers, creates employment barriers, and puts LGBT people’s jobs at risk. Same-sex partners are often ineligible for benefits given to heterosexual spouses (such as healthcare or social security). Harassment and bullying at school mean LGBT youth have lower graduation rates than other students, resulting in lower lifetime earnings. And, of all sectors of the LGBT community, transgender people are most economically marginalized, with 70% unemployed.
LGBT people often have no legal protections against discrimination in the workplace, when accessing government and nonprofit services, in jails, or classrooms. The impact of discrimination is exacerbated during the jobs crisis: LGBT people are more likely to be laid off, face greater barriers to employment, and rejection by their families means they may not have financial support from relatives in times of economic need. Moreover, having experienced discrimination from service providers, LGBT people are less likely to access the services they need to help them weather financial difficulties.
Currently, we lack the capacity to effectively share our findings, including information on LGBT economic needs and the solutions that support impactful change. Your support will allow us to scale up our national presence and reach local and community funders, economic development thought leaders, social entrepreneurs and other innovative leaders, and the policy community.
More about the Center:
The San Francisco Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Center is a welcoming place for our diverse LGBT community and its supporters to find innovative services and fabulous cultural programs that lead to a stronger, healthier community and a more equitable world. Opened in 2002, the Center is housed in a purpose-built solar-powered facility in the Upper Market/Castro neighborhood. Since opening, it has become a central place for the LGBT community and allies to gather, organize, celebrate, and access services. We host over 200 programs and welcome more than 9,000 individuals every month.
The Center is more than a building, more than a collection of programs and people. It is a symbol that represents a belief in civil rights, freedom of expression, and an inclusive community for all people. These are fundamental San Francisco values, and we believe fundamental American values. Your donation is an investment in making this shared dream for a better future true today. With you support we can win the Job Raising Challenge and get people in need back to work.
