BENEFITING: POWER TO THE PEOPLE
Help us raise $10,000 this holiday season to improve a community library in San Lorenzo, Boaco, Nicaragua. Founded in 2001 by community volunteers, the San Lorenzo library supports more than 6,000 rural people who have little or no access to books or computers. This community-run library has been open to the public for 12 years and now needs your support. The funds we raise will help the library get new books of all kinds, incuding books by Nicaraguan authors, text books, reference books, literature and children's books. Funds will also help purhcase updated bookshelves, kids furniture for the children's room, new laptops and will support general building maintenance like replacing broken window pains, fixing locks, and renovating the bathroom wall.
The community library is located across the street from the San Lorenzo elementary school so school children visit it daily BUT THEY NEED MORE BOOKS TO READ. The books in the library are old and commiunity members are more likely to borrow books if there is a wider selection of current material.
What does this have to do with solar energy? San Lorenzo is a small town near many of the communities we work in that now have solar-powered schools. School children from the communities where Power to the People has installed solar systems can take computer classes at the library and can borrow books to read at home. Supporting this library helps deepen the impact in the communities where we have installed solar energy systems. And someday, we hope to install a solar system on this library as well.
Please help us revive the library. Your donation will help to improve education, encourage reading, increase computer literacy and support a unique community-run library. Thank you!
