You can all read the official B Strong spiel below about what the ride is for: celebrating those who beat cancer, and funding care for those who haven't made it into remission yet.
But for me, this ride is about more than that this year.
I first got involved with B Strong 2 years ago through my work (who put together a team every year), and I completed the 24 mile loop because that was the shortest option. I was unable to participate last year, and then this year, I felt like I ought to do it again. And this time, I wanted to do the new, 38 mile loop.
What makes it about more than just cancer treatment, is that just one month ago (early June) one of my dear friends lost her mother to cancer. Brandie was a wonderful woman, a caring mother to her two daughters, and an amazing nurse. I was privileged to know her for the few years that I did. So this year, I ride in memory of Brandie Taylor. The money fundraised isn't going to help her, or her family. But it is going to help other cancer patients who have families just like hers.
So this August, I'll be riding 38 miles, one mile for every year she got to spend with her daughters (ages 17 and 21). I find it oddly poetic, a God moment if you will, that the B Strong Ride added a 38 mile loop at the very time that 38 combined years of motherhood came to an end.
Whether you join me on the road, or by donating to the cause, I'm grateful for each one of you.
Let's do everything we can to kick cancer's butt this year!
B Strong Ride is a bicycle event that celebrates cancer survivorship and funds a complete year of cancer care at the Boulder Community Hospital Center for Integrative Care and also benefits the George Karl Foundation.
Both organizations have deep personal impacts on people whose lives are impacted by cancer. Supporting them moves our riders and sponsors to super human efforts.
Founded in 2011, B Strong Ride has been an outstanding success:
- Over $2 million raised
- Over 4,500 riders
B Strong is for:
- Cyclists of all ages and abilities and
- Not just cyclists. B Strong is a family event with outstanding food and entertainment throughout the day. During and after the ride, Celestial Seasonings will be open for tours and tastings. There are also two great museums within a mile: Leanin' Tree Museum of Western Art and, Shelby American Collection.
