In this year especially, it has been seen that helping women to achieve their full potential is vitally important. The best way to do that is access to education, so that informed choices can be made. I've been so inspired by the sights, sounds and sheer momentum of the Women's Marches happening worldwide and am trying to harness that energy into a sustainable project that is going to empower women for generations. If you know me at all, you know that I have from time to time, supported and raised small amount of funds for various community projects via Random Acts. RA, having completed work on their orphanage in Haiti, also provided a school bus and are helping to build a Free High School in Nicaragua. I'm incredibly proud to have contributed in a small way to these projects, and you may wonder what the difference is between these efforts and the myriad other similar projects you could donate to. Well, Random Acts strives to help these communities to help themselves by liaising with community leaders to find out the best way to offer support. They source local expertise, knowledge, labour and materials and help to create self sustaining projects of genuine benefit to the people they serve. This is not about swooping in like a superhero to save people, this is about asking people what they want, what they need and then helping them to achieve that is as sustainable a way as possible. This fundraiser is to raise funds to extend the new campus for the high school. This means that even more people (especially women) will be able to access the education and other resources available. In times like these this is exciting and vital work. An educated women educates her children and so on, and a place like this brings invaluable knowledge, life and opportunities to the whole community. As for my part, I spend the majority of my time caring for people. I look after members of my family who have physical disabilities and mental illness and I know how invaluable 'the right help at the right time' can be. I have leaned on various services and charities at times in an effort to do my best for the people that rely on me. I would like the opportunity to offer some of that help back. Every penny you donate goes directly to RA as all travel costs are covered by the volunteer, so you can be sure that you too, are giving back all that you can. Thank you for considering a donation. RANDOM ACTS wrote - In Nicaragua, being born in a rural community often precludes access to high school education and all the opportunities in life that come with it, especially for women. Many rural families practice subsistence farming and do not generate enough income to meet their basic needs even excluding education. These and other individuals such as women who are pregnant or have children, anyone over 18, and people who must work during weekdays are excluded from regular schools. The Free High School of San Juan del Sur gives these students a chance at secondary education and a better life. In 2012, Random Acts fundraised to help them purchase a bus. In 2015, we took on a much bigger dream: a Center for Human Development which now serves as a campus for the Free High School. We raised the money to complete the first building of the new campus, and in both 2015 and 2016, our top fundraisers traveled to San Juan del Sur with us to meet both teachers and students and to put their own physical effort and sweat into building the campus. This year, the first building is ready for students but they still need equipment and more classroom space, so we're fundraising to furnish the first building and construct the second building of the campus. Without their own campus, the Free High School students are second class citizens in the eyes of the state, their community, and even themselves. These older adolescents and adults squeeze themselves into elementary school desks and chairs every Saturday, they have very little access to a computer lab that’s far away, and they are treated as lower class students; the discountable. It’s time to give these deserving students a beautiful campus of their own, complete with a library and a computer lab. Doing so not only gives the school a home, but also teaches the students – some for the first time in their lives – that they are equal to their peers, and valued citizens of the world. Please join us in turning this dream into reality! The first 25 people who raise $5,000 on this Crowdrise page between now and November 10th, along with one lucky drawing winner, will be able to join the Random Acts team on our last trip to San Juan del Sur next February 9-16 (subject to change based on opening ceremony date). Click the “Fundraise for this Campaign” button to get started! For more details about the Dreams to Acts: Nicaragua project, including requirements for joining the trip, please visit our Dreams to Acts: Nicaragua website. Important information regarding the funds you raise or donate: All donations raised through the Dreams to Acts: Nicaragua fundraising campaign on Crowdrise will go to Random Acts, a division of The Art Department, Inc. The primary commitment for these funds is to construct the Center for Human Development in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua and to support any other local organizations with whom we may choose to partner (this includes administrative and operational expenses associated with our D2A: Nicaragua project). Should funds from this campaign be available after our commitment is satisfied, we reserve the right to re-allocate them to past or future development projects or special initiatives.
