Raising the roof!
March 29, 2016
BENEFITING: US Association for UNHCR
EVENT DATE: May 01, 2016
I am creating this fundraiser to celebrate that I have been on this amazing planet for 30 years... I wanted to do something remarkable for this milestone.. first I thought of camping or going down a river with friends.. then I thought of a dance night or renting a laser tag place and acting like a kid again (laser tag is awesome BTW)... but then I realized that myself and so many of my friends have it really nice... even when we are piling on the debt to go to grad school (and learning how to make the world a better place!), even when we can't afford to live in a expensive city like DC... somehow we make it work!... There are so many kids and others out there who don't have it as nice as us, and it is very important to me to give back for what I have been given in life. Compassion is one of my biggest drivers, and I want to honor it on my birthday. The Syrian civil war has really affected me. I don't think I connected with a crisis like it since I began studying foreign policy. The most harrowing aspect to me is the displaced children and their families. Imagine one day you are going about your every day life, and the next you are fleeing from danger. Leaving behind everything you knew, and probably getting stuck in one of the many refugee camps, or bouncing between them, or taking the treacherous journey to Europe. I want to show them that there are people who care about them, who want to see them get through this. I am going to have a get together around my birthday (and after finals!) where I invite my friends over to write letters to people living in refugee camps. I'm going to ask instead of presents or buying me a drink or anything else, let's pool our money and help out some people who really need it. If you would like to join me in this cause, please consider donating some money. It will all go to the US Association for UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees). They're a respected organization and have high marks for fiscal responsibility, so our money is really going to make a difference!
They are doing a lot of good work helping refugees all over the world, as well as internally displaced persons and aslyum seekers. You can check out their numbers and facts here http://www.unhcr.org/pages/49c3646c11.html
I am starting the donations off with $300. That's $10 per year I have been alive. It doesn't seem like much when you put it that way. $10 isn't that much, right? A sandwich? A cup of coffee for me and a friend? But $300? damn thats a lot to a broke college kid... $300 is a little less my car payment each month, its almost 1/2 my rent each month. Its an amount that if I had, it would be *really* helpful, but if I gave it away, it would be even more helpful in the long run. It's all relative....
I am by no means asking y'all to donate that much, but just pointing out that we can all give a little. Not to get all preachy like that cup of coffee commercial or anything ;) So please, if you have any questions or concerns over this, just shoot me an email and we can talk about it some more. email@example.com Thank you for helping me make my 30th birthday meaningful!
PS: just show me some love and give $5-$10 for my brithday :P pleeeease!
