Sarah's Birthday Wish: Make'n Moves for Marcus

Every year on my birthday, I reflect on all of my blessings. I’m a firm believer that I am who I am because of the incredible people who have believed in me, supported me, encouraged me, and loved me. To honor my family and friends for all that they have done for me, I want to pay it forward. This year, I’d like to help my friend, Marcus Murphy. I had the privilege of meeting Marcus in New York City. Marcus is an INCREDIBLE human. He is 18-years-old and a very talented ballet dancer. He’s currently studying and dancing with the Ellison School Ballet on a full-ride academic scholarship. He was born in Haiti and adopted by a family in Arizona when he was 5-years-old. He has overcome a lot of obstacles to become a dancer and pursue his dream. Life was difficult growing up as a ballet dancer in Arizona and he endured a lot of ridiculing and bullying to follow his passion. His dream is to be the first professional black male principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. AND HE WILL DO IT. Unfortunately, Marcus’s scholarship does not cover housing or living expenses. He saved all of his money to fly from Arizona to NYC to train with the school and only had enough to pay for one-months rent. Due to his intense school and training schedule, he has been unable to keep a job. Thus, he was evicted from his apartment and has been bouncing around between different homeless shelters…while still going to school and dancing. He trains for 6-7 hours straight a day and takes classes for school online part-time. As you can imagine, his training is very intense and it’s very difficult to keep his energy up to complete his schooling at the end of the day…but he still does it. Marcus is able to eat a lunch provided by the school, but doesn’t have the funds to get breakfast and dinner. He relies a lot on his friends (most of them are not aware of the severity of his situation) for snacks and small meals. A couple of days ago, he passed out in class because he was training on an empty stomach. The homeless shelters Marcus has been living in have strict curfews that make it difficult for him to keep his dance and school schedule. They are also very scary and unsafe. Marcus has been accepted on a full-scholarship to attend the School of American Ballet’s summer program. This scholarship INCLUDES housing and a meal-plan, but it doesn’t start until June. I am so inspired by Marcus’ determination, drive, work-ethic, talent, and heart. This year, in place of gifts for my birthday, I am asking that you help my new friend Marcus. If you were planning on taking me out for drinks, a meal, or sending a gift, please use the money to help get Marcus a home and money for groceries. (*Unless you were going to buy me something real cool…still send that ish my way. I’ll accept graciously…JUST KIDDING) I hope to be able to make the next 3.5 months until Marcus starts his next program a little easier by setting him up with a room in the building where his peers in the program stay and enough money for groceries to keep his body properly nourished. Friends and strangers alike, I appreciate you taking the time to read Marcus’s story. My passion in life is to help people achieve their dreams because I have been so fortunate to be walking the path to achieve mine. I truly believe the world is a better place because of people like Marcus and I am grateful that he is sharing his gift with the world. Here’s to make’n moves for Marcus! xoxo
