Sarah's Quest for Educational Equality
Organized by: Sarah Ripperger
Traveling to Costa Rica to volunteer in public schools that get little to no government funding. These schools serve children from the nearby "barrios" that can't travel the long distances to schools with more funding. The people of the "barrios" need these schools to stay open and the only way to keep them open and their children learning is through volunteers. While in Costa Rica, I will be taking Spanish courses to learn the language of the country. Not only will this help me during my time in Costa Rica, it will prove to have an immense effect on my teaching in the United States. When I get back to the states, it will allow me to be able to better speak and communicate with my students' parents. Being able to speak the language of my students' parents is invaluable. The money that is raised will help me with my flight getting to and from Costa Rica, accommodations, food, and Spanish lessons.
