Sarah Stokey's 2016 Iditarod
Organized by: Sarah Stokey
I am a 27 year old strong woman trying to run my first Iditarod, a 1049 mile sled dog race that runs from Willow, AK to Nome. This has been my dream since I was in the 3rd grade, and I have spent the last 5 years of my life in Alaska dedicated to building a competitive team of sled dogs and fully embracing the life of a musher. This year, I have gained the confidence and experience to sign up for the 2016 Iditarod. Unfortunately, I still need a lot of gear to properly outfit myself and my dog team for this incredible journey.
Iditarod is an expensive race to run, with most mushers estimating it to cost somewhere between 25,000 to 35,000 dollars. Outfitting a 16 dog team, getting them the best food out there, and making sure I have the top gear isn't easy. Plus, there are all the expenses associated with training. This year, I've been fortunate enough to live in a small 14x20 off-grid cabin in Willow, Alaska where there are numerous trails to train own. However, traveling is an important part of getting my team ready too. Warm weather has also made it a necessity.
I need your help getting to the starting line!
