Sarah's volunteer trip to Ghana with Unlock Foundation
Organized by: Sarah Posner
EVENT DATE Sep 04, 2015
My dad was a Peace Corps volunteer in Niger in the late 1960s, volunteering his time as a doctor, vaccinating the local population against smallpox. During his two years of service, my dad and his team inoculated hundreds of thousands of people with the smallpox vaccine. Hearing stories about the incredible work my dad did during his Peace Corps service truly inspired me to utilize my own skills to serve the public. Since his time in Niger had such a positive impact on his life, I've always wanted to go to West Africa and do volunteer work of my own.
The opportunity to get involved with Unlock Foundation came in Winter of 2014, when my wonderful friend Michelle, co-founder of Unlock Foundation, asked me to help her with a fundraiser for the non-profit. As soon as I heard about all of the amazing work Unlock is doing to address critical educational gaps in rural African schools, I knew that I wanted to get involved. One thing that I love about Unlock Foundation is that it is a small non-profit, started by friends, and it fosters direct relationships with teachers, students and community members, by focusing on sustainable projects that have a lasting contribution to the schools. Planning the happy hour, engaging others, and raising awareness about the projects Unlock is doing in Ghana and Namibia made me want to get even more involved with Unlock Foundation, so I became a Global Ambassador.
As a Global Ambassador, the Founders of Unlock Foundation asked if I wanted to join them on a volunteer trip to Unlock's partner school in Ghana. During Unlock's trip to Ghana this September (2015), we will be meeting with teachers, community members, and students at one of our partner schools, Old Odunase School. We will assess the progress of our current projects at Old Odunase School and find out other needs that the school has. We are also planning to take the students on a field trip to Kakum National Park! Your support will help make my trip possible. Any additional funds raised will go straight to Unlock Foundation. Thank you SO much for your support:)
