THE STORY:

Dear Family and Friends,

Hi, I'm Sarah Busansky, I'm turning 16 on May 6th. Some people think I have a disability, but I really have an inability. My inability means I am unable to be anything but happy. I laugh uncontrollably at "seemingly" tragic moments, and exude random qualities of randomness at random times.

One place where my inability really shines is Dream Oaks Camp. Dream Oaks is a sleep away camp in Sarasota, Florida for kids with all kinds of disabilities, founded by Eddie Mulock. Did I mention that I am in wheelchair? I started attending Dream Oaks at the age of 8. My mom found out about it from Caroline's mom, Tish . Caroline is also in a wheelchair just like me. I realized pretty quickly that Dream Oaks was a place where I could be myself and just have fun. Dream Oaks is a camp that I will remember forever, which is exactly why I have chosen to fundraise for them instead of accepting gifts on my birthday.

When my mom dropped me off for my first summer at camp, she was so nervous. As a result, she couldn't stop hovering over my shoulder. Of course, I walked in there with complete confidence and my heart was full of excitement. I brought a red, yellow and blue suitcase containing all my sleep away goodies. I knew all the counselors were nice, but my first was Melissa. My first impression of Melissa was she had all the qualities of a nice person, and I mean to the max. My mom told her everything about me including that my favorite song was Roxanne, by the Police. By the time we were done, I was sick of my mom being there. I told her to go home in the sweetest way that an 8 year old could. With that, Melissa and I walked back to our accessible cabin ready for a fun week at camp. We did lots of activities together including swimming, horseback riding, and boating.

At the end of the week, you always receive an award. The award usually addresses a quality that a counselor likes about a camper. My first award was a Miss Sweetheart sash decorated in red glitter. From that week on, I knew I wanted to keep coming back to Dream Oaks. Over the years , I have experienced many more fun memories that will always hold a special place in my heart. The thing that I love most about camp is how easy it is to forget about your disability and focus on fun, positive experiences. I've made tons of lifelong friends such as Shelby and Trent. The counselors are way too awesome for words.

Dream Oaks has touched my heart in so many ways. I hope you are moved by this letter and will kindly give a donation. Foundation for Dreams is the non-profit organization that runs Dream Oaks Camp. All your donations are tax deductible. The money I raise will fund scholarships to campers that can't afford it and help build a community center and accessible swimming pool.

Sincerely,
Sarah "Miss Sweetheart" Busansky
