I am running the 2014 NYC Half Marathon on behalf of the charity, Back on My Feet (BoMF), which is an organization dedicated to helping the homeless transform their attitude, perspective, and future through running. I wanted to reach out to you to ask for your time to understand both the charity on behalf of which I am running as well as my own personal story.
About the charity...
BoMF is an encouraging community where members have an opportunity to redefine themselves not as homeless, but as hardworking and dedicated runners, friends and teammates. Once members start to change their personal perceptions, BoMF prepares them for independence through housing, training, and employment opportunities.
BoMF's perspective is as following: "Running offers many strong and powerful lessons for life. Running teaches us to take things one step at a time; that you can’t cheat life - you have to run miles one through nine to get to 10; when facing an uphill challenge we can persevere or take the easy way and turn around. The lesson we love the most is that if we keep moving forward, we arrive some place different, we arrive stronger and often as better versions of ourselves."
I have decided to run on behalf of this charity, because I can associate myself with this quote. A couple years ago, I found my passion for running while spending the summer in New York City. It was through running that I was able to channel my energy, stress, and worry, and learn that through one breath, one stride, and one mile at a time, I could do anything that I set my mind to. It taught me to be patient when things didn't come right away, while at the same time persevere and never give up when things weren't easy... Because everything worthwhile takes time, determination, and most importantly faith--faith in the cause that you're fighting for and faith in yourself.
Now I don't think that I only learned to believe in myself through running, but rather that it was something that gave me inspiration. I grew up very unathletic and uncoordinated, hating almost every sport that I picked up; somehow, years later, I stumbled into the world of exercise, fitness, and healthy living in college. Now I find myself exercising and maintaining an active lifestyle everyday, having completed dozens of short to mid distance running races, three half-marathons, and my first triathlon. Knowing that I have made this transformation in terms of my physical capability and perspective gives me certainty that I can do the same for all other challenges that life may present down the road.
Race fundraising details and updates...
My race is on March 17th, and will take place throughout out all of Manhattan, starting in Central Park and working its way down to the Financial District. I will need to raise $1,000 by March 1st, and am asking you to donate any amount that you can to help me help BoMF. Every dollar that is contributed will be a resource for those who have somehow lost their way, found themselves on the streets, yet are looking to turn their life around. Everyone deserves a second chance, an opportunity to reassess, acknowledge, and realize their own self-worth; so I am asking you to please assist me in helping them materialize and maximize their potential contribution to society.
I have set up this fundraiser relatively late, because I have had a running injury in the past month and wasn't sure if I would be able to heal in time to run this race. I have been seeing a physical therapist for the past couple of weeks and am on the road to recovery, so I still plan to run the race if my body continues to heal. This is another lesson of patience for myself... Although it's frustrating, with time, care, and attention to my body, I will hopefully be able to accomplish the goal that I have set for myself!
