I was diagnosed with stomach cancer in March 2012 at age 35. I am naturally thin, maintained a pretty healthy diet, tried to exercise regularly and had no health issues. About a month before I was diagnosed, I was experiencing nausea and vomiting 2-3 days a week for about 3 weeks. I went to see my primary care doctor who thought my symptoms did not raise any serious concern. In fact, she thought I might be suffering from acid reflux or possibly becoming lactose intolerant. I decided to see a gastroenterologist (GI doctor) because I wanted to be reassured that there was nothing seriously wrong. At my initial consultation with the GI doctor, she immediately felt the tumor in my stomach by simply pressing down on the upper part of my belly. She scheduled me for an emergency endoscopy the very next day. During the endoscopy, she knew right away I had stomach cancer. The tumor was so big, she was surprised I had never suffered any pain or stomach discomfort. My team of doctors moved fast. In no time, I was undergoing chemo, I had my entire stomach removed (total gastrectomy) in June and then chemo again after surgery. By the time I was diagnosed, I was already at Stage 3. I strongly believe that if I had not gone to see a GI doctor, I would not be here today. I had never heard of stomach cancer. No one in my family has ever been diagnosed with it! I was young, healthy and living a very happy and stress free life. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN TO ME?! I will never know the true answer to that question. It is very easy for us to ignore symptoms, for doctors to misdiagnose us or for us to be too busy with every day life to pay attention to our bodies. The best and only test if you have any doubts is an endoscopy. Stomach cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide!! There are little to no symptoms and it is very easy to get misdiagnosed. Read about stomach cancer. Tell your family and friends. If caught on time, stomach cancer can be beat and we can all live without a stomach. My goal is to raise awareness and help raise money for further research….may we find the cure soon! I thank God, my husband, my family, my friends, my doctors, and everyone who has supported me in my battle. I continue to pray that my periodic CT-Scans continue to show no signs of cancer returning and that I can live to say I KICKED CANCER'S ASS! Please support the cause.
