*All money raised benefits the Tomorrows Children's Fund (tcfkid.org) at Hackensack University Medical Center*
Satya is the (adorable) face of pediatric cancer. She's also my daughter. So to kick off September - Childhood Cancer Awareness Month - we're kicking off our new fundraising iniatiive and asking you to join us! And we need is a $1 a mile.
Last September, my daughter battled Neuroblastoma. And, thanks to great doctors, powerful prayers and amazing support, she won. Our fierce little fighter beat cancer before she could walk, but we know many of her brave friends who are still fighting for their lives, their families by their sides, some torn apart emotionally and financially.
According to the National Institute of Health, in 2014 15,780 children newborn to 19-years-old were diagnosed with cancer, with 1,960 dying of the disease in the U.S. And while pediatric cancer is rare, it's the leading cause of death by disease in kids. BUT LESS THAN 5 PERCENT OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S TOTAL CANCER FUNDING IS DEDICATED TO CHILDHOOD CANCERS EACH YEAR. (That part should piss you off. If it didn't, read it again, and imagine me yelling it at you!)
After Satya's surgery scars healed - my emotional ones are still raw - I vowed to run a 1/2 marathon to raise money for the Tomorrows Children's Fund (tcfkid.org) at Hackensack Hospital where she was treated. (I'm not a runner, this was really hard for me.) Together with my incredible team of riends and family, we raised nearly $60,000 for the kids are their families. The money has gone to pay mortgages, gas/electric bills and to put food on the table for families whose kids are fiighting for their lives. And Satya and her All Stars aren't done helping them wage war against pediatric cancer!
I've run almost 150 miles this year to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer and I don't plan on stopping. I've got more races in September and October and vow to run another 1/2 marathon to meet this fundraising goal (Kudos to CrowdRise btw, they let me donate 99 cents for every dollar you give us, so come on, give us a dollar already!)
So please buy in, help the kids fight the good fight, and donate $1 a mile. That's just $5 for a 5K, $10 for a 10K and $13 for my next 1/2. Or just donate $1 or $2 for when we're out pounding the pavement to train.
Come on, stop reading. Get your wallet. It's just a $1!
