Al DiGiodo, of Al's Angels and owner of Saugatuck Sweets - has generously offered to host this fun, last day of school event for the kids of Fairfield, to benefit The Cancer Couch Foundation. Please register your child and 3 friends for a team and come out and support us on June 17th from 3-5pm in front of his Fairfield store!
The Cancer Couch Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit corporation founded by Rebecca Timlin-Scalera, PhD, breast cancer survivor and neuropsychologist, in 2016 to raise money exclusively for research on metastatic breast cancer (when it spreads outside of the breast to other parts of the body). After her diagnosis in 2015, Rebecca quickly became aware of the dire need for more funding for this stage of the disease, the one that kills you. Although 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, and 30% of those with early stage breast cancer (Stages 1-3) will eventually be re-diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer (Stage 4), only about 7% of breast cancer research funding is allocated to this stage. While there are thankfully more and more treatments becoming available for metastatic breast cancer, there is still no cure, and the average prognosis remains at 2-3 years. She is on a mission to change those facts, accelerate, and substatially improve treatment and outcomes for those currently living with metastatic breast cancer. Rebecca has carefully selected two of the most promising young scientists in the field, at two of the world’s leading cancer centers, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and The Dana Farber Cancer Institute, to fund their studies in this field. The Cancer Couch Foundation is privately funded and volunteer-run. Therefore, 100% of donations and event proceeds can go directly to these two institutions to fund these cutting edge research projects on metastatic breast cancer. Rebecca will personally meet with the scientists and their teams twice a year to get updates on currently funded projects, discuss projections for future studies, and relay the information directly to donors through this website. Furthermore, both institutions have committed to matching funds for these projects donated through this foundation!
