BENEFITING: Unitarian Universalist Church of Savannah
Historic Savannah is a diverse, progressive and creative mecca. It stands out as a leading thought community for the New South. We have a vibrant arts scene, a healthy nonprofit sector, and a thriving small business community. Our local radio, however, is anything but local. It is corporate radio, with little room to shine a light on local issues, ideas and talent. Members and friends of the UU Church of Savannah realized the need for community radio that can provide a voice and visibility for our outstanding local organizations, events, and projects. To meet that need, we are applying for a Low Power FM license in order to offer programming for and by the many talented underserved groups that align with Unitarian Universalist values:
- the inherent worth and dignity of every person;
- justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
- acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth;
- a free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
- the right of conscience and the use of the democratic process;
- the goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all;
- respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
A little bit about programming
Savannah Soundings will be community radio with a global soul. It will focus on celebrating Savannah’s creative depth, diversity, and caring community. Secular and non-secular programs, music and talk, live and prerecorded content will all find a home at the station. A Programming Advisory Committee with members from both the UU church and larger community will recommend new programs that align with our values.

Vicki Weeks, Sarah Todd, Kevin Ionno, Tom Kenkel, Louise Frazier, Cliff Kavill, Denise & Bob Boehner, Jan Elders, Pat Redden, and Rev. Dave Messner.
If you're as passionate about starting a vibrant, local radio station as we are, we’d love you to join our team. As a team member you’ll create a fundraising page on Crowdrise to help raise the money to make it happen. The Crowdrise platform makes it easy and fun and your support is invaluable if we are going to create this community station.
There are a million ways to help. Consider giving up your next birthday by asking for donations instead of gifts. Or run a 5K and ask your friends to sponsor you. Host a Savannah Soundings party or simply email your reasons for supporting this project to your network of friends along with a link to your fundraising page. Go a step further and put the link on your social media pages! Lots of little donations really do add up. The power of the crowd is real. Please create a fundraiser and help us make a real-life difference for this incredibly important cause.
Support us! Donations will go toward creating a true community radio station that will connect and strengthen opportunities for Savannah musicians, artists, thinkers, and organizers.
We need to raise $5,000 to cover the cost of required engineering studies and exhibits to prepare for filing the application. The first phase of this project is applying for a permit to build the station. In the unlikely event that we aren’t awarded a permit, all donations to the project would be used to create similar opportunities to celebrate the diverse voices of Savannah. Things like: community debates, blackbox theater, streaming internet radio, speaker forums, Rap, Haiku and poetry slams, and original music performance opportunities. Any donations—no matter how small—are greatly appreciated.
