Save Lives of 50 Mothers and their Newborns

Brief Summary: Bangladesh still has a high maternal mortality rate of 176 per 100,000 live births (2015) because of factors which remain in the community, especially for under-privileged people. Apart from poverty, cultural barriers and lack of information prevent women from accessing maternal and newborn health services. Often women are not the decision makers about their health, and the delay in deciding to seek treatment can worsen conditions. Spreeha Maternal Care Program will provide a pregnant women with prenatal, postnatal, and neonatal support to make sure the mother and the newborn are healthy before and after birth. Furthermore, the program will create awareness and empower women with the knowledge they need for a safe pregnancy and the power to act on it. The allocated budget off 5000 USD will enable 50 women to have safe pregnancies and enable them to bring healthy babies into this world. Project Objective: 1. 50 women will receive maternal care through Spreeha. 2. Decrease in Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR). Target Population: Pregnant women from Rayerbazar slum. Number of Beneficiaries: 50 mothers. Project timeline: 11 months. Project Strategy: Spreeha Maternal Care Program aims to support a mother during her pregnancy which will enable her to give birth to a healthy baby. During a woman’s pregnancy she will be provided with prenatal support- 5 mandatory doctor check- ups, prescribed pregnancy supplements, ultra sonogram. She will be connected to closest delivery center for child birth. After birth, she will be provided 2 postnatal checkups followed by 1 neonatal check up by the doctor. Moreover, the mother will be given advocacy on nutritional and health facts to ensure both the newborn and the mother are healthy. Expected Barriers/Challenges: - Families often ignore simple healthy practices or do not comply because it is against tradition or common belief. - The expecting mother might not be the decision maker about her health in the family. Program Outcomes: - To ensure mothers have access to prenatal, postnatal and neonatal care. - To break social stigma and harmful health practices in the community. Project Budget: Total Budget: 5000 USD
