BENEFITING: 350 Kishwaukee
EVENT DATE: Dec 31, 2016
Save Our Illinois Land (SOIL) is a project by a coalition of organizations and citizens across the state of Illinois concerned about the impact of pipeline infrastructure on Illinois’ land, waterways and our fellow citizens. SOIL is currently working on a grassroots campaign to halt permitting and expansion of oil and gas pipeline infrastructure in Illinois and to keep fossil fuels in the ground. (moved up)
Illinois has become a hub of oil pipeline infrastructure, much of which transports dirty Canadian tar sands bitumen through the state and on to export facilities. In its 2014 Fourth Quarter Earnings presentation, Enbridge Energy, Inc., a Canadian fossil fuel pipeline company, announced its plans for yet another pipeline – a twin to the existing Line 61. The new pipeline is expected to parallel Line 61, which was built in 2008-2009 and runs from the Wisconsin state line through Boone, DeKalb, LaSalle and Livingston Counties to the Flanagan Terminal near Pontiac, IL where it will connect to other export pipelines. This early announcement puts us in the unique position of organizing ahead of the formal announcement and permitting processes, instead of the norm, which is after the pipeline project is well on its way to being permitted and built--tantamount to stopping a moving freight train.
