THE STORY:

WOMENS CENTER INCORPORATED wrote -

The Women's Center, Inc. has provided 45 years of safe shelter.

We are now shy in our budget to the amount of: $521,058: $384,841 is the amount owed to us by the State of Illinois as of 6/30/17 and $136,217 is the amount that the State shorted us on Sexual Assault Services for FY17. "We save lives, because people can come to us when they are fleeing a terrifying situation and then we give them the tools that they need to heal and move on"  said Cathy McClanahan, Executive Director. The Women's Center receives state funding through contracts to operate its domestic violence and rape crisis programs.  While the Illinois budget impasse continues, we have to resort to layoffs, unfilled open positions and furloughs to get by. We cased in our savings to make payroll this month.  If the state fails to pass a budget, the shelter will be forced to close its doors in October.

We are in the process of taking out a line of credit for $250K using our building as collateral. However, we are very uncomfortable doing this as it puts our shelter and our clients' futures at risk.

Since 1972, The Women's Center has been a southern Illinois institution of safety and hope. It was one of the first domestic violence shelters in the country. For 45 years, the center has continuously offered help to women and families in their darkest times. We provide service in 8 counties.

Just in the past year, nearly 1500 survivors turned to us for help. Battered, bruised and emotional distraught mothers who have suffered physical abuse at the hands of the person they should trust the most have found a safe place for themselves and their children at our Shelter. Victims of sexual assault - left confused, feeling violated and oftentimes physically injured have been met by Women's Center staff at hospitals to help them not just survive the worst day of their lives - but recover and thrive as a survivor.

Help us continue to help them. Every dollar amount counts.
