Bowie 17 Update
March 04, 2016
BENEFITING: ANIMAL SERVICES AND ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS INC
UPDATE: January 27, 2016
1 horse, 4 ponies and 13 babies made their freedom ride to Missouri.
Sadly #547 whom we named Romeo passed away as a direct result of severe pneumonia. He was given lots of love and was warm and safe til the end.
We are dealing with severe cases of strangles and pneumonia and for now the remaining 16 are stable and under the care of a veterinarian.
Pictures to follow soon.
Thank you so much for your continued support, these babies are not out of the woods yet!
Each year year 160,000 horses are sent to Mexico for slaughter. Colts and fillies under the age of 6 months are separated from their others for the first time at the kill pen.
Unable to shipped because they are too young they are left behind as their mothers are loaded on the truck. Babies are beside themselves screaming and the mares are screaming back. When the foals reach "6 months" they become legal to ship to slaughter. Many are so thin from being weaned too early. Some never make it out of the pens, dying before they can be loaded. A group of not-for-profit organizations network to save these babies.
Because they are so young they require months of rehabilitation. When they are healthy they are then placed for adoption. Unfortunately the demand for young horses is low because you will have to house and feed young horses until they become old enough to ride which is a few years down the road.
There are 13 young babies at the Bowie Kill Pen that are due to ship to slaughter. We hope to raise $5000 to cover their quarantine and care for 30 days until they are cleared to make the trip to their new home.
Please consider donating any amount will help.
