BENEFITING: SURF FOR LIFE
The oceans cover over 70% of the earth's surface and there is so much yet that we have to discover about them. Occupying less than one quarter of 1% of the marine environment, coral reefs are a critical biodiversity hotspot. They are home to more than 25% of all known marine fish species, and they are dying. We have already lost 27% of the world's coral reefs. If present rates of destruction continue, 60-90% of the world's coral reefs will be destroyed over the next 30 years. We can stop this.
Maker Corps leverages an international maker community to solve critical problems with technical innovation. We work with local communities, academics, researchers, nonprofit partners, and volunteers. Our participants learn maker skills and put their collective talents towards causes like environmental preservation.
This year Maker Corps will bring participants to remote coastal areas to learn about coral reef conservation initiatives. Each participant will get the opportunity to build an OpenROV drone and see it in action. These drones will be used for STEM educational initiatives and research projects dedicated to understanding how corals are affected by shifting environmental conditions.
To make this happen, we have partnered with The Hydrous and OpenROV, but we need your help! Please consider making a donation today.
Together we can save the oceans.
