Save My Face
Organized by: viola deng
I am a refugee from the Sudan civil war. I survived poverty, abuse, genocide, slavery when I was 7, and a brutal civil war. I escaped to Egypt where I was raped and my face smashed in with the butt of a rifle by a refugee camp guard. My beautiful daughter, Sarah, is a product of that violent union.
I wanted a better life and future for my daughter so I applied to the U.N. in Egypt for admission to the U.S. as a refugee. After 5 years of desperately waiting in Egypt, Sarah and I arrived in Phoenix, Arizona in June 2006!
I am a full-time caregiver and Sarah is now a 5th grade honor student at Hidden Hills Elementary School in Phoenix. We are very grateful to be in America and 3 years ago, we became American citizens!
At the same time, a vascular tumor started to develop deep in my left jaw. It continues to grow bringing pain to my right eye. Doctors say if it is not removed, it will affect the tissues in my mouth, jaw, and neck and eventually impair my eating, talking, and swallowing!
Specialists estimate that it will cost up to $90K to remove the tumor and reconstruct the jaw, a procedure that involves plastic surgery that my insurance will not cover. For my daughter's sake and future, please help me raise the necessary funds for the surgery as I need to be a healthy, working mother.
