The idea for Save our Sexy, Inc. (SOS) was born in 2012 when Aisha N. Smith, founder, learned about the premature deaths of two African American men that died 2 weeks apart. One was a family member and the other a neighbor, both 52 years of age. The loss of these fathers, sons, brothers and grandfathers shook her. “These two young men were hard working family members and an important part of my community. The fact that they died of preventable and manageable diseases really bothered me.” Within the next year Aisha learned about 2 other men under 60 who died prematurely. ”I knew then that I wanted to play an active part as a RN and a woman to decrease premature deaths in men of color by reminding them of how important their role is in the community and finding out what they needed to make the necessary changes towards better health”.
