BENEFITING: WASHINGTON ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL
In the dark depths of the Salish Sea lives a little fish that plays a big role in the lives of our marine creatures from salmon to seabirds and even the majestic Orca whale.
Who is this Sound habitat hero you may wonder? None other than the humble surf smelt.
While far from the showiest fish, these little guys are the key to a diverse and rich Puget Sound ecosystem. They feed on minute plankton and pass this huge energy base on to other species. Forage fish, like surf smelt, are a key food source for marine birds, rockfish, salmon, and numerous other fish species.
A large food chain rests on the back on this tiny fish and increased environmental threats are putting this little fish and a big list of other marine life in jeopardy.
The People For Puget Sound Program works to protect all Puget Sound habitat. From advocating policies that protect the health of the Sound in Olympia to working on the ground with engaged citizens in our Aquatic Reserves, the People For Puget Sound program speaks up for marine life from smelt to orcas.
But the Aquatic Reserves Citizen Science Committees and the People For Puget Sound Program need your help. Funding to support projects to track the health of Puget Sound habitat are being deeply cut and increased threats from a proposed boon of oil and coal transports through our waterways have dramatically increased, leaving our Salish Sea Habitat like Surf Smelt incredibly vulnerable.
When you make a gift today to help us reach our goal you are helping us save our surf smelt and all Salish Sea habitat.
