Help us raise funds for the Red Panda Network to save red pandas in the wild, and all the endangered species protected in the forests they live in.
This is the real Firefox challenge: Here you can help the firefoxes (another name for red pandas) survive !
Red Pandas are threatened with extinction across the entire range of the Himalayan mountain forests they lived in: from Nepal, northern India, Bhutan, Burma (Myanmar) to the Chinese provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan. Less than 10,000 survive in the wild, some say as few as 2500, and some are meanwhile too disconnected from other groups to maintain a viable population.
They are a landscape species representing the health of the entire ecosystem: if they are ok it indicates that also other species and their habitat are ok. Unfortunately, a lot of their habitat has been lost to rapid development, destructive road construction, expansion of agriculture and grazing into more marginal mountain areas, exploitation of medicinal plants, timber, and fuelwood.
The consequences are not only catastrophic for this very vulnerable species and other rare animals: also the humans who depend on these forests for their livelihoods are increasingly feeling the impact of the rapid deforestation: lack of water in the dryer seasons, loss of fertile soil on steep hillsides, landslides, climate change affecting the rainfall and their harvests, etc. And further downstream the water flowing down now more rapidly and less regulated by forests results in even more floods affecting millions of people in Nepal, India, and Bangladesh.
Your support creates productive alternatives for poor communities instead of cutting down forests, and training and employment for forest guardians.
Just $70 pays for a whole month of a forest guardian, and with just $5 per month for one year you can adopt a representative red panda.
Tell all your friends to pitch in and help you and us to meet the challenge!
