THE STORY:

Peter Shearer wrote -

In June the NY City Council passed their FY2011 city budget which completely cut the $432,500 Sexual Assault Services funding that they had been allocating since 2005. That’s .001% of the total NYC budget. Of this, ~$50,000 per year went to the Mt. Sinai Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Program (SAVI.) There is a NYTimes article here: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/01/nyregion/01assault.html

SAVI trains and provides volunteers who give support 24 hours/day, 7 days a week to people who are victims of domestic violence and rape. Their volunteers come to the ER to be with the victims. The SAVI volunteers offer comfort, a safe, friendly face and often they just sit with the people for hours on end while the victims speak with police, have xrays or rape kits performed and receive further care.

After 10 years of working in the ERs of New York City I can attest to the invaluable help these people provide. They are not social workers, or trained medical examiners, but they are the first step in helping the victims of violence heal. When a rape victim comes in a 3am often I don’t have a social worker to be with the person right away. SAVI volunteers arrive immediately, stay for hours, and are invaluable.

I had already planned on running the NYC Marathon on November 7th but when I heard the news about the slashing of SAVI funding I decided to use my run to help them. Please help me help them. I am hopeful that better economic times are on the horizon and the NYC tax revenues will help restore funding for sexual assault programs in the FY2012 budget so your donation with really help bridge the gap and prevent a loss of these vital services. In the past when I have raised money, I have always said, “anything you can give is appreciated” which is still (mostly) true, but this time, please give more if you can. I work with these volunteers and the victims: I know the true value of the service they provide.

And if you want to read more about this website crowdrise.org that I am using to do the fundraising, it was created by the actor Ed Norton and there was a recent NYTimes article about it at http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/05/business/05proto.html
