Sherman is my beloved pet (dog, companion) Sherman Peabody was badly burned in a house fire after which he was turned in to a local shelter and then rescued by Merit Pit Bull Foundation. His skin injuries were quite extensive, but the rescue treated him and helped him heal to the point where he was ready for adoption. We fostered him during this time and simply fell in love. We knew he was our dog, so we adopted him. Because we had him for awhile before adopting him, we knew his previous skin injuries would require a bit of extra care to protect his large, sensitive, exposed areas of skin (left without fur due to the burns). We make sure he wears sunscreen and/or t-shirts in the summer and limit his sun exposure to protect him from sunburn. We also make sure he wears sweaters or coats in the winter to keep him warm. We were prepared to take care of those needs for the rest of his life, but we were not prepared for the additional complications that have recently presented themselves. For the past few months, Sherman has been having even more skin issues. After multiple vet visits and numerous medications (some causing him some negative side effects) and holistic treatments, he had only limited relief. We finally sought a specialist for diagnosis. It was recommended that Sherman have 5 skin biopsies to determine the cause of his troubles. His biopsy results should be back in the next 1-2 weeks. From there we can determine, hopefully, what the cause of the skin issues are. The specialist suspects either vascular issues (likely related to the burns), immune issues (unrelated to the burns), or both. The biopsies, post-op care, and the medications that will be required are likely to reach at least $1000. We love Sherman and we will do whatever we can to make him well, but these unexpected bills are taxing our finances. Sherman has such a dedicated following, many of whom have been with him from the beginning. We thought we would reach out, share Sherman's story, and ask if you would be willing to help us get our boy well?
