Stray Dog Humane Management by Lanna Dog Welfare
Organized by: Lanna Dog Welfare
Lanna Dog Welfare is a local volunteer organization established in 2003, with the aim to help control the stray dog population in Chiang Mai, Thailand in cooperation with the Provincial Livestock office and the Chaing Mai University Faculty of Veterinary. We have sterilized over 7000 dogs and cats. We also provide education about animal welfare to the community and we are involved with international projects for rabies research and prevention program in Thailand including WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals and NIID (National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Japan).
Each year starting in March we begin our annual field sterilization which takes place twice a month until December. We work in various places in and around Chiang Mai city. Often we set up in Buddhist temples which are common dumping grounds for stray dogs in the communities, or in local municipality offices. We try to sterilize the stray dogs or homeless dogs and this is also a good opportunity for people to bring their sick dogs for free treatment for illness or injuries. We also like to take this time to educate communities about humane animal welfare, and vaccination. We have seen great response from people and as a result community involvement is growing each year.
LDW is also very active to help push stray animal management and animal welfare to the city level; and help pass the first animal welfare bill in Thailand, therefore making it illegal to traffic dogs for meet and their skin across Thai borders.
Some municipalities will provide a small portion of the cost but most of the expenses fall on Lanna Dog Welfare. We survive from donations and our costs for sterilizations are as follows:
To sterilize one dog costs 400-600 Thai baht ($18-20). (depending on size and sex)
We usually sterilize 35-50 animals during each field sterilization which brings the cost of one day to 25,000-30,000 Thai baht ($ 800-1000)
Our annual project which includes 20 field sterilization days comes to about 500,000- 600,000 Thai baht ($ 16,000-20,000)
We pledge for your support and donations to help us continue our work during the year of 2014 - 2015.
