THE STORY:

The Darby Library, the nation's oldest continuously operating public library, is in danger of closing permanently. The library was founded in 1743 by a group of Quaker's with the support of Benjamin Franklin, and has been in operation since. The library now serves a vital role in the at-need community of Darby Borough, in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Delaware County, like many suburban communities, includes areas of great wealth, and areas of great poverty. The Darby Library serves a poverty-stricken community for which a public library is not a luxury, but an absolute necessity.

The library is both a historic venue and an indispensable institution. It would be a shame for the Darby Library to have to close it's doors due to lack of funding. If you are able and willing, please show your support for the community of Darby Borough, for the public library system, and for the legacy of a great Philadelphian: Benjamin Franklin.
