THE STORY:

Saving Paws Animal Rescue wrote -

Saving Paws Animal Rescue Inc., a no-kill, 100% volunteer run organization is 10 YEARS OLD this year!

We’re excited and ready to expand!!!

The rescue officially became a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization in 2006; we acquired our current location in 2011.  This location has allowed us to have a base for potential adopters to visit, hold community awareness programs, and shelter hundreds of kittens and cats prior to adoption, as well as storage and office space.  The property has a cat sanctuary building for our permanent guests, those who are not adoptable.  Unfortunately, it’s not large enough to accommodate many dogs or puppies.  We rely on the support of foster families until they are adopted.  We have been rescuing animals since 2006 and are ready to expand our mission.

While we have a current facility, it lacks the space for housing all of our animals and having a training center for the SPARKED program.  Our sanctuary for our permanent cat residents needs major updating.  We will be doing major fundraising this year to build or secure a new facility that can better house the animals in our care and accommodate our programs.

WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS

TWO SPECIAL PROJECTS

  1. Saving Paws continues to strive to expand our programs and offerings to the community.  This year we launched the SPARKED Service Dog training program.  Saving Paws was awarded a grant from Petco to certify 2 trainers in the training of service dogs - this program will use rescue dogs to be trained as   service dogs for people with disabilities.  We all know someone- a family member, close friend or co-worker that has a disability.  It may be a child with autism, someone with a disability from a serious illness or accident, a veteran with PTSD or injuries from war.

But what most of us do not know is the average wait for a person to get a trained service dog ranges from 2 to 4 years.  It is our goal to help both the person needing a service dog and the dog who needs someone special in their life.  We currently have 2 puppies enrolled, Lili- an Australian Shepherd / Great Pyrenees mix and Bella a Lab / Great Pyrenees mix.

2.  With proper housing available we will launch our emergency boarding program.  Working closely with the area domestic violence shelters, Saving Paws will be offering temporary shelter for pets of survivors.  Often, not wanting to leave a pet in the abusive home, they themselves will stay in danger.  This program will allow their pet a safe haven for a period of time as they seek to start a new life.  This program will also provide temporary boarding for those who are ill and require hospitalization and do not have anyone to take care of their pet.  This will allow them to know their pet is being taken care of, so they can concentrate on their own healing, allowing them to keep their pet and to not have to surrender it.
