Saving the lives of children in India who need an emergent bronchoscopy

India accounts for 25% of the world's pneumonia child deaths. The WHO indicates that one child dies every minute from pneumonia in the country. Respiratory diseases take a toll on more than 2 million children in India each year.

Many of these children require the procedure of bronchoscopy to be performed. Bronchoscopy helps to clear the airway of secretions, open up collapsed segments of the lung, help get a sample to identify the bug and hence help to treat appropriately. This will improve the oxygenation of the child and improve the chance of survival.

I am a doctor, trained in pediatrics in India. I have worked for a public hospital in Bangalore, India, which sees more than 2500 admissions in the ICU, 10,000 admissions in the wards and many more in clinics. Many children here die of respiratory conditions, with a dire need for bronchoscopy.

In the city of Bangalore, there was no one performing the procedure on children. I went to Singapore to be trained in this procedure for a year to be able to come and help the children back home. However, once I am back, the public hospital is unable to invest in buying me a bronchoscope to use. To have a skill with you, which you are unable to use or save the lives around you is heart wrenching.

I only hope for an instrument to be able to help these children. I may be the only one doing bronchoscopies on children in the city of Bangalore with a population of 4.3 million. But I have to start to make this change. And need a push to make the change. I hope for a day when this instrument will be used by many more doctors I can train to help save more children.
