BENEFITING: A FUTURE WITHOUT POVERTY INC
A smoked filled house OR (your choice) A clean efficient stove A mother is cooking over an open fire in her home. The youngest child has a severe burn from the fire that is healing slowly. The mother has what could be lung cancer from the smoke from the fire that fills the house. All the family members’ eyes are stinging from the smoke from the open fire. Every day that the family cooks its meals the smoke fills the house. Every morning the children look for firewood to cook the day’s meals. Firewood is getting harder and harder to find and the children keep going further to find wood. Someday soon they will have to buy the wood and they do not have enough money to buy food let alone wood. This unfortunately is not an uncommon scenario in Tepehua Mexico. A Future Without Poverty is working with our affiliate the Tepehua Centro Comunitario A.C. Community center for the Indigenous of Tepehua. Chapala to install 7 high efficient cook stoves. This pilot program will use stoves that are made, installed and maintained by a local small business that makes the stoves locally using local workers. The cost of one new stove fully installed and the home owner trained to use the stove is $350.00. According to the Global Alliance for Clean Cook Stoves, nearly 3 billion people globally cook food and heat their homes using open fires or traditional cook stoves. Smoke exposure from these methods poses a significant global health threat that is responsible for 4 million premature deaths every year, according to Radha Muthiah, executive director of the Alliance. Those figures, Muthiah noted, make “the simple act of cooking a meal the fourth greatest health risk in the world.” Women and children are particularly vulnerable. The goal is to install, and maintain 7 stoves for a total cost of $2,450. This includes training for the families to use the stoves. Each stove installed will reduce smoke exposure for the family members, reduce serious burns and help the environment. The savings in fuel, time and reduced health problems will help the family have a more secure future.
