In May of 2003, Brian lost his sister Dorna and cousin Leatrice at the hands of his brother-in-law. On the day before their divorce was finalized, he decided to take his sister and cousin life because he could not accept the fact that their marriage was over. There were signs that were present that warned the family that there was a potential danger that were ignored because they didn’t think the person was serious. Brian and Patricia did not know each other at the time but who would have known that they would go through a similar situation with her family. In May of 2015, Patricia lost her Aunt Valorie and cousin Tionna to a senseless act of violence by her cousin’s ex-boyfriend. With the case pending, there is not much that can be said about the situation but there were also signs present that he was a potential danger. Tionna was trying to keep him away from her with a restraining order but a restraining order can only go but so far. When it comes to domestic violence, we should work harder as a family and community to keep people safe from their abuser.
This is their first Half Marathon which is the longest distance that both of them have run. Brian and Patricia have ran a number of 5K’s and 10K’s and this time they wanted to support a charity in honor of Dorna, Leatrice, Valorie, and Tionna. Through their run, they will be supporting Gwen’s Girls, Inc which is the organization that was helping Tionna before the time of her death. Gwen’s Girls, Inc. has been empowering girls and young women in Allegheny County since 2002.
