Saving Sam

On August 20th of 2015, I traveled to one of the world's poorest provinces in Cambodia, no access to running water, no electricity or medical treatment. Food is scarce, limiting the towns people to beg for money or dig through the trash. Along my journey, I met a family of two that would forever change my life, a family that I was destined to meet. The people we meet who seem special, with whom we connect instantaneously, they enter into our journey to show us we are on the right path. To show that we are creating a path for ourselves that is true to our being, to our soul, to our creativity and connecting to people at higher levels proves this. And so enter my little buddy, Sam and his grandmother. Sam is 4 years old boy who has a basketball size tumor in his head who is solely being raised by his elderly grandmother. He is confined to a stroller that he will soon outgrow. In talking with his grandmother, surgery was not an option due to her poverty level. She was worried due to her frail body that it would get to a point she would no longer be able to care for Sam without help, unlike America, in third world countries they do not have access to the basic needs, unless you have money. Society had deemed him worthless due to his appearance. Without full examination, it is unclear if the tumor is operable. My goal is set high, this will help Sam and his grandmother travel to the city of Phnom Penh to the International Children's Hospital. Hopefully enough will be raised to cover the surgery if the Dr's can perform it, but also allow the family to have a cushion so they don't need to worry as he will require life long care. I made them both a promise that I would do whatever I could when I returned home, and so another journey begins to give one family some peace and comfort knowing that they matter and make a difference.
