Simon is a gorgeous 12 year old draft mule. He has had a rough life so far--overused for work, dumped at auction, sold for slaughter and saved at the 11th hour--literally. He left Pennsylvania on December 26th for rescue in Tennessee, and if he wasn't on that transport he would have gone to Canada and been killed. Now in rescue, Simon was seen by a vet and has a potentially catastrophic hoof issue commonly known as Canker. Canker always carries a guarded prognosis, but we believe Simon can be saved, and have opted for him to undergo surgery. Treatment consists of thorough careful debridement of the affected tissue on Simon's foot, followed by a regimen of topical therapy applied daily and continued until the disease is resolved. To debride the affected tissue, Simon will be placed under general anesthesia. His foot will be trimmed appropriately removing all loose exfoliating sole as well as any excess toe or heel, while his leg is in a tourniquet so he can't bleed out. Firm pressure will be placed across the vascular bundles over surface of the sesamoids using a bandage. He'll spend a week in the hospital and then have a recovery time of 2 to 3 months. This beautiful boy has the sweetest personality, and all of the work to get him well is going to be more than worth it. He has not had the chance to know happiness yet, and he has a long life left to live. Please help Safe Harbor Sanctuary provide Simon the amazing life he deserves by contributing for the costs of his surgery.
