SAWIP

Our mission is to develop, support and inspire diverse new generations of South African leaders.

ABOUT SAWIP

The South Africa-Washington International Program (SAWIP) is a seven-month program aimed at developing,  supporting and inspiring diverse new generations of emerging South African leaders.

SAWIP selects students from the University of Cape Town, the University of the Western Cape, Stellenbosch University and the University of Pretoria who are poised to make a positive difference in building a sustainable and democratic South African society. Students participate in a rigorous leadership development and community engagement program where they grapple with their country’s most pressing socio-economic challenges in a group from differing backgrounds. Part of the program is spent in Washington, D.C. over the summer. Professional work exposure and mentorship opportunities are provided to all students in Washington, D.C. based on their individual career and academic goals.  Students are also culturally immersed through living with host families, where they are given an opportunity to be exposed to different world views and new perspectives.

SAWIP seeks to foster nation-building and deepen democracy in post-conflict South Africa through the creation of a community of change-agents from diverse backgrounds. The programs diversity is its most important characteristic, as students who would ordinarily not engage with each are immersed in a challenging program for seven months and work towards solutions for their challenges together. Community engagement is a key component of our program as we instill the value of servant leadership in participants. In addition to individual service projects in their communities, each year’s  team conceptualizes, plans and executes a group community project. This is an opportunity to empower the youth in at-risk communities with the skills our students have acquired.
