My 6th grade daughter was barred from school 12 days for refusing to participate in a test she had a legal right to refuse. We had to file an Emergency Petition to get her back in school. A year later her severely disabled brother, who cannot speak and refuse was physically forced to take the test while others in the same school district were allowed to refuse.
All over Maryland children are being intimidated into taking high stakes tests that educators and parents agree are killing real learning. When we tried to fight back we were refused and forced to file litigation.
We currently owe over $16,000 in legal fees incurred to win parents the right to refuse for our children. We are trying to raise enough funds to see this case to the end. The case seeks to win affirmation that parents have a right to refuse to allow their children to participate in for profit assessments. We believe in local, teacher created assessments. Not Bill Gates/Rupert Murdock/Pearson billion dollar assessments that their families don't participate in.
When we win the bullying and intimidation of our children ends. The shutting out and disrespecting of parents rights to decide the educational direction of their children ends. Teachers return to teaching, not administrating.
For profit education in America must end. Parent and teacher voices must be returned to the classroom.
When a school feels emboldened to tell a parent their child cannot have some Oreos at lunch, or a child is suspended for chewing his PopTart in the shape of a gun, something is seriously wrong.
Our rights do not end at the school house doors.
