BENEFITING: SAYRE HEALTH CENTER
The Dr. BLJ Jr. Sayre Health Center provides direct care to uninsured and underserved in West Philadelphia, regardless of their ability to pay. But SHC is more than a health center; it is an innovative partnership that links clinical care and education in order to improve health care, strengthen education, and increase career opportunities.
The Sayre Health Center connects West Philadelphia students with career opportunities in health care through direct learning as well as leadership roles in health center outreach and governance. In partnership with Penn and the Philadelphia School District, students in grades 9-12 receive exposure to health professions, mentoring, healthy cooking classes, internships, career advice, hospital and college life plus help with college applications and more. We encourage students to consider health care as a career at the same time that we provide health care to the community. This combination of education and community outreach makes SHC unique, and we’re excited about having Wharton students involved.
