February 15, 2017

Dear Team Ollie Supporter, Last year, your support and generosity helped me raise close to $12,000 to support the South Boston Neighborhood  See more
Orla O'Brien

THE STORY:

I couldn't be prouder to be a member of The South Boston Neighborhood House's 2016 Boston Marathon team.

One of Boston’s original historic settlement houses, the South Boston Neighborhood House was founded in 1901 with a mission ‘to support family and neighborhood life in South Boston’. Affectionately known as “The Ollie” after our founder, Olivia James, the Neighborhood House is known for the deep ties and connections among participants and families that have endured for generations.

You probably already know how important this organization is to me -- I've likely been recruiting you for committees, inviting you to fundraisers and spreading my love of "cocktails for charity" for years.  I grew up there: it is where I had my first job, went on my first trip to New York City, ran my first road race, stayed out of trouble as a teenager.

For many of us, South Boston has become the place to be. Condo values and rents are continually rising, construction is booming and new bars, restaurants and shops are opening at a monthly clip. We're drinking margaritas at Loco, doing pilates on L Street and spending sunny afternoons playing cornhole on the Lawn on D. This shiny, new, expensive Southie is what you may know best, but it's not the full story of our neighborhood.

Income inequality is growing. There's a huge dispersion in Southie between those who have financial resources, and those who do not. 25% of South Boston households report an annual income of less than $25K per year. Many of those are families or the elderly.

Boston's children are much more likely to be living in poverty than any other age group. In South Boston, 44% of residents under the age of 18 (over 2,000 children) are living in poverty. This is higher than any other neighborhood in Boston, except Roxbury (slightly higher at 49%).

The programs at the Ollie serve these vulnerable groups - young people, families, seniors --  and impact the lives of 2,000 individuals each year. The five service areas, Early Education & Care, School Age Programs, Education & Career Development, the Senior “Jet Set” Program and Family Engagement, serve every generation.

Knowing that every cent is going to an amazing organization is going to push me through A LOT of miles this winter.  Please know that none of this would be possible without you -- your contributions, your moral support and your faith in me that I can actually pull this off.

Let the countdown to the finish line (and the after party) begin!
