BENEFITING: SOUTH CENTRAL SCHOLARS FOUNDATION
"My opportunity for a better life starts with access to a college education. I will become a legacy and influence to those who will follow my steps towards a better life." – Norma, UCLA '20, Intended major: Psychology
We are South Central Scholars. Every day, we are changing the odds for students like Norma. Talented, hard-working individuals who know that education is the means to a better life for them and their families. South Central Scholars is raising funds to support our newest cohort of college-bound freshman with a 4 to 6 year college scholarship. The scholarship will help students cover college expenses not already covered by financial aid. SCS has selected 110 students from 57 high schools across Los Angeles County through a rigorous application process. Our goal is to ensure each student receives a $2500 scholarship for the 2016 – 2017 school year.
We need to raise $50,000 with the scholarship campaign in order to achieve our goal. Nearly all of the Scholars are from low-income backgrounds; are Latino, African-American, or Asian; and are the first in their families to go to college. Most of them have overcome incredible challenges and will be attending highly selective and competitive colleges across the country, including Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Brown University, Dartmouth, Harvard, UCLA, USC, UC Berkeley, and Wellesley College.
Please help us reach our goal and invest in our future leaders. Your donation will go entirely to funding scholarships for our college-bound freshman. And, you can be sure your investment will produce measurable results. With support from SCS throughout college, 98% of South Central Scholars graduate from college within 6 years.
Your support will help students like Sulema, who will attend Barnard College in the fall. Read on to learn about her story. "Growing up, I felt that I would be confined to the homogeneity of my neighborhood forever: confined to the drug culture, graffiti, and poverty; confined to the tiny one-bedroom apartment that I share with my mom and three siblings, I completely devoted myself to school, and in doing so, discovered a passion for foreign languages and cultures. [...] I want to study International Relations in college. I plan to major in Political Science and minor in French. I hope to complete a five year joint degree program offered at Barnard College in conjunction with the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs and earn both a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in International Affairs. I aspire to be a diplomat or humanitarian aid worker in the future."
Your donation will make a difference in the lives of our youth. Please donate today! Thank you for your support of South Central Scholars.
