THE STORY:

SERAH KAHIU wrote -

I am just one African village girl with a big dream...a dream to see that the planet's poorest has a healthy meal and safe, affordable medicine.

I trained in JKUAT(Kenya) as a Biotechnologist. It was a conscious choice of career, because I am more than convinced that biotechnology , if used diligently and ethically, can  make Africa nutritionally and medically sufficient. I have only scratched the surface of the technology and would like to understand it further.

Early this year, 2011, I applied for a position of Graduate Studies programme at Singularity university (SU) .This is a 10 week summer programme geared towards brainstorming on the solution of the planet's most pressing challenges. I got selected as part of 2011's  lot of 80 students, from over 1000 world wide applicants.

For some reason, the wonderful people at SU found something great in me. I also do beleive there is something in here waiting to be nudged out and make this world a better place.

Mine is not really that grandiose, all I want is to use the knowledge I have to make sure that the African poor, and indeed the world's poor, are fed and diseases are healed or mitigated. The African wealth of Ethno- knowledge needs to be harnessed to solve these two problems.

The problems of the future - climate change, population explosion, reduced farm lands and lack of drinking water, can only be tackled using new solutions in new mindsets. This programme at singularity University will open my eyes on these solutions and I will be able to replicate them  at the grassroot level back in Kenya. And when what I do works, then the whole global village can adopt it!

If you notice my focus is largely Africa, because that's the only place I have been all my life. I have witnessed abject, punishing poverty right at my door step that just makes my heart ache! And I refuse to run away from our problems, surely the education I have had ought to sort this out... somehow.

When all is said and done, I hope to start a company that will adopt local (african) ethnobotany knowledge of medicinal and edible plants and use biotechnology techniques to:-

1. Manufacture safe and affordable pharmaceuticals from Invasive plant species.
2.Develop drought resistant, fast growing, pest resistant indigenous food crops

I am doing my part, please do yours and  sponsor me in  this noble cause.

Thank  you.
