School for Deaf and Mute Children
Organized by: Samip Joshi
I am raising funds to support a deaf and mute school (ashram) for children in India founded by my grandaunt.
This institute was established in 1987 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat with only two deaf and mute students. Its mission is to provide education, rehabilitation and welfare to deaf and mute children. The school also looks after vocational training and employment of these children. It should be noted that all these services are provided free of cost as almost all the students come from very poor class families.
When I visited the school in January 2015, I was blown away by the care and compassion the members of this institute provide to its nearly thirty students. Many of the students come from rural areas where resources are scarce. Some have families who cannot afford meals, let alone services for their child's hearing impairment. This school offers hope to countless children who may not otherwise have a voice.
The school is currently in need of an updated version of a computer program that measures students' hearing progress. The software is called Dr. Speech - more information on the software can be found through this link: http://www.drspeech.com/. This software costs nearly 3 lakh rupees ($4,500). Additionally, the school is generally in need of funds for covering hearing aids, which cost between 10k - 1 lakh rupees ($150-$1,500) depending on the need.
As you can gather, the $10k fundraising goal is just a bare minimum. I'd like to raise much more over the lifetime of this fundraiser. Any amount will help. I hope you will consider donating to this cause.
